Special 2 Euro coin 2011
The Erasmus coin is minted in 2011 to commemorate the publication of the book of Desiderius Erasmus, The Praise of Folly or laus stultitiae. The book is considered to be one of the most influential works of western civilisation. In The Praise of Folly Erasmus could scoff at the way how people pursue their own interests with extreme folly and without foresight.
Desiderius Erasmus was, apart from an author, also a theologist, philosopher and humanist. The Erasmus coin is the first Dutch 2 Euro commemorative coin with a national theme. The coin has been designed by Dylan Shield.
The coin is circulated in the Dutch payments market from the 25th of January. The coins are not available at the Post Offices. The total mintage amounts to 4 million pieces. Priority during the mintage is to mint the circulation coins as quickly as possible, the collector’s editions will therefore be minted in phases. Especially for collectors a Proof version of the 2 Euro coin is included in the National Proof Set 2011.Jore
